When You’re Martha in a World That Needs Mary
There’s a moment in Luke 10 that hits a little too close to home for women like me — women who are always “on,” always needed, always carrying someone else’s world on their shoulders.
Martha is rushing around doing everything right.
She’s serving.
She’s preparing.
She’s making sure everyone is fed and comfortable.
She’s the heartbeat of her home.
But she’s also exhausted… anxious… stretched thin… and quietly breaking.
Sound familiar?
Sometimes life turns us into Marthas without our permission.
The responsibilities pile up.
The kids get sick.
Work demands more than we have.
The bills keep coming.
The body gets tired (hello GLP-1 side effects).
The heart gets weary.
And suddenly, we’re running, serving, fixing — all on an empty tank.
In the middle of her overwhelm, Martha finally snaps.
She goes straight to Jesus and says, “Lord, don’t You care?”
Oh, how many times I’ve whispered that same question in the chaos of life.
But Jesus doesn’t scold her. He doesn’t shame her.
He says her name twice — a sign of deep affection:
“Martha, Martha… you are worried and upset about many things.”
It’s as if He’s saying:
“Daughter, I see your overwhelm. I see the pressure. I see the load you never complain about. I see the tears you cry when the house is dark and everyone else is asleep. I see you.”
Then He gently shifts her gaze:
“But one thing is needed… and Mary has chosen what is better.”
Let’s be honest — it’s easier to be Martha.
Doing feels productive.
Serving feels responsible.
Being busy numbs the pain.
But Jesus calls us to something deeper.
The “one thing” is not another task — it’s a posture.
It’s sitting at His feet.
It’s choosing stillness over striving.
It’s reaching for His presence before the world pulls us apart.
It’s letting Him speak life into the places we’ve quietly let die.
Here’s the truth that sets me free:
Jesus isn’t asking me to stop being Martha. He’s inviting me to start being Mary first.
When I choose Him before everything else:
My mind settles
My spirit strengthens
My peace returns
My identity becomes clear
And the weight I carry becomes lighter
Because what He gives me in that quiet place “cannot be taken away.”
Your world may be loud today.
Your responsibilities may be many.
Your body may be tired.
Your heart may be overwhelmed.
But the One who sees you is inviting you to come and rest.
Just sit.
Just breathe.
Just be with Him.
The world can wait — Jesus cannot.
And maybe today… that is the better part.
✨ Devotional: “The One Thing My Heart Needs
Scripture: Luke 10:41–42
Reflection:
There are seasons when life feels like a storm I didn’t choose. The dishes don’t stop, the bills don’t wait, my body is fighting fatigue, and the emotions I carry feel heavier than I ever admit out loud. Like Martha, I run, I work, I fix, I hold everything together — and yet inside, I’m tired.
But Jesus doesn’t correct Martha with anger. He speaks her name twice — tenderly, lovingly.
“Martha, Martha… you are worried and upset about many things.”
He could have said,
“Daughter, I see the load you’re carrying.”
Jesus notices my overwhelm before I even whisper it. He sees the tears behind my strength. He sees the way I care for others while quietly breaking on the inside.
Then He gently reminds me:
“But one thing is needed.”
Not perfection.
Not performance.
Not productivity.
Just presence — His presence.
Mary chose the one thing that restores — sitting at His feet. Not running. Not fixing. Not trying to be strong. Just resting. Receiving. Breathing again.
Prayer:
Lord, I lay down everything I’m carrying today — the worry, the weight, the exhaustion. Help me choose the better thing, the thing my soul longs for: time with You. Quiet my heart. Fill me again. Teach me to sit at Your feet before I face the world. Amen.
