From Scars to Stars: Healing after the storm.
This week in Homecell, the Word challenged us to stop counting our scars and start counting our stars. For me, this was more than just a nice phrase — it was deeply personal.
For so long, I carried scars that seemed to define me. Scars of being abandoned as a child. Scars of abuse and rejection. Scars of pouring myself into a marriage, constantly trying to save it, only to discover the painful truth of betrayal and violence. I thought love meant enduring anything, even if it meant losing myself. But the more I tried to hold everything together, the more broken I became.
Yet in the middle of the wreckage, God’s Word reminds me that He is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). He does not measure me by my past or by what others did to me. Instead, He calls me to look up — just as He told Abram to look at the stars in Genesis 15.
God whispered to Abram, “Count the stars… so shall your descendants be.” Abram was childless at that moment, but God was pointing him to His promises, not his pain. In the same way, God is teaching me — and maybe you too — to stop counting the scars left by others, and to start counting the stars of His faithfulness, provision, and love.

What This Means for Us
Scars are not your identity. They are reminders of what you survived, but not labels for your future.
Stars represent God’s promises. Every blessing, every answered prayer, every moment of peace is proof that He is still writing your story.
You are never alone. Matthew 18:20 says, “For where two or three gather in My name, there am I with them.” Even when you feel abandoned, God surrounds you with His presence and His people.

Reflection for the Week
Am I letting my scars dictate how I see myself?
Where can I see God’s “stars” — His promises and blessings — even in the middle of my healing journey?
---
Prayer for the Week 🙏
Father, You see the scars that life has left on me — the scars of abandonment, abuse, betrayal, and loss. But I thank You that You are the God who heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds (Psalm 147:3). Help me to stop focusing on what broke me and start focusing on the promises You have spoken over my life.
Give me courage to step into healing, wisdom to walk in Your truth, and faith to believe that my future is brighter than my past. Where there has been pain, let there now be peace. Where there has been abuse, let there now be freedom. And where there has been rejection, let me experience Your unfailing love.
I choose to count my stars and not my scars this week. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Friend, if you’ve walked through divorce, abuse, or abandonment, know this: you are not alone, and you are not defined by what happened to you. Lift your eyes to the stars — God is still writing a beautiful story with your life.
